Kuya the Group

Devoting over a decade to producing for the industry’s top recording artists, the Toronto-based and highly regarded Kuya Productions is now releasing tracks exactly how they had originally started out; as a musical group themselves. At the beginning, Kuya’s journey was solely based on looking for somebody to believe in them. Where they are now is a total different story; the present day Kuya is ready to  share with the world the foundation of what their name truly means - Brotherhood. Fans can expect a complete self-expression within their music, as the aggressively talented group is releasing these tracks strictly for the love of their craft.

The word Kuya, meaning older brother in the Filipino language, was chosen as the name for the group for a very specific reason - Kuya consists of 2 sets of brothers, Sammy and Bobby (born and raised in Toronto), along with Johann and Jayson who hail from Montreal.
Kuya quickly caught the attention of internationally-recognized producers (Wyclef Jean, Pharrel Williams, DJ Enuff, Timbaland), and record label executives within the North American Music Industry. They  had demo deals with RCA and EMI Canada. Unfortunately due to personal reasons Johann and Jayson left the group and the dreams for Kuya the group were on hold.

Kuya2Bobby and Sammy became quickly known for their production and Kuya Productions was established. Living in New York, the two developed their craft as songwriters and producers, producing number one hit singles for top artists in the industry. In 2004 they had produced on two U.S. Top 10 albums including the No.1 Grammy nominated Album SUIT for hip hop artist NELLY, as well as Mase's Welcome Back album. Both would do extremely well with Nelly reaching 3 million in sales world wide (3x platinum) and Mase hitting gold (500 000 units). Big Jon Platt from EMI Music Publishing signed them on in 2005. Over the next few years they would produce some of today's biggest artists. Official releases include Jesse McCartney, Kandi Burruss, Big Time Rush, Akon, Girlicious, and Slim of 112 among others.

The year 2009 was devoted to the development and recording of their new R&B artist, JRDN. The next year was known as a breakout year for JRDN, achieving everything they set out to do; this included a top ten single, a number one hit on the Much Music charts, along with two JUNO nominations. JRDN’s second single Like Magic achieved a SOCAN award for the most played song on Urban Radio across the nation.

2014 marks the return of Kuya the Group. Johann, Sammy, Jayson and Bobby are reunited to finish what they started. As each member has grown artistically and shared different life experiences since the group was first formed in the early 90’s, Kuya is currently in the production phase to rediscover the dynamics of not just their sound, but the dynamics within each other as group members. These life experiences have helped shape their current sound - mixing international influences, raw soul, while at the same time fusing in the fresh sounds of today.
